Every spring I paint irises, for I adore them for their vivid colours and unusual shape. This particular painting was made in May 2017 using oil paint from life, as a foray into cubism. I was able to portray the flowers as geometric shapes with a palette knife. The juxtaposition of the rigid shape of the flowers with their tenderness creates a tension, prompting the beholder to take a deep look to reconcile it. This piece was selected for exposition at the national art exhibition in October 2017 in Kiev, celebrating National Artist’s Day.
